Sam was the best r.b. in tha district during that time.i was his fullback for 3 years and seen what he did game in and game out,sam could cut on a dime.then leave u in the dust,he smoked ronnie harvey during the state game in 90,harvey was the state champion in the 100yd. dash,i agree though mike hamm was a close 2nd,it was always a track meet when we played them, fortunately we were able to beat them during my 4 years.Mike Hamm is a top noth dude,so is Sam!!!!
Have u ever played the game of FOOTBAll before?

    Re: Mike Hamm Coeburn 91?

What made him so good and so strong, he always rode his bike to and from school. And he lived on the mountain. He was a beast. This young man deserved to get his number retired. He never missed a practice or a workout, even stayed late to get in extra lifting. If it was to bad to ride his bike, then he ran to school. (not because he didn't have a vehicle, he did, just gave it his all)Hope this helps you with your questions. If the kids from Coeburn took a little pride in their conditioning, like the players did back then, Coeburn would have a better team. And yes players are getting lazy... They only do what they have to do to get to play. Carl and Crabtree ran these boys till they dropped. You were ready for the game or you didn't play... Coaches just don't push kids now. If you do it you do if not , oh well.

Both were quality backs but IMHO Jamie Bryant from wise was the top back that year he just did not have as good a team around him as Sam or Hamm did.

Danuals was the fastest player I ever faced but at least in the Clintwood game I was not impressed with his change of directions We were a slow team but the DEs did a good job of not letting anything get to the outside and Danuals could not get anything between the tackles (Now if he had got the corner there was no one on our team that could cave stopped him since you were on his team do you know what his 40 time was because that kid could motor)

    Re: Mike Hamm Coeburn 91?

Daniels and Hamm only played one year at the same time and that was when Hamm was in 10th grade. I may be wrong but I do believe Sam graduated from Burton in 89. I will have to give Sam the overall advantage over Hamm in speed and lateral movement.
As far as comparing Hamm to Jeff Williams they both had different qualities Hamm was faster but Williams had better lateral movement and was more elusive. Jeff had more career yards and attempts than Hamm but he started as a freshman and Hamm didn't get hardly any carries as a freshman, of course Jeff was a senior when we were freshmen.

you are wrong Hamm was a Jr in the season of 90 Daniels a senior (My senior year as well I rember it well LOL)

Hamm ran behind a much better O-Line than Williams did I would have thought that Williams would have been the faster of the 2 Hamm was a battering Ram and while he was a running back than Nixion was a few years ago they were still cut from the same cloth.

Crud I do seem to be the only one who though that Briant was a better running back than either of them.

Thanks I couldn't remeber which year Daniels graduated, I was thinking he was 2 years behind us. wyattyap was wrong then when he said that they beat us all 4 years he was there because we beat them at Burton our sophmore year, Sam's junior year I remember this one well since there was big fight after the game on the field and outside the field house. I remember one thing in particularly well I was walking off the field with another player and we passed Reecie Gravely and said good game and he said some choice words and we called him a sore loser and the 3 of us got into on the field but was seperated quickly by some fans. The next year at Coeburn was pretty interesting as well Sam had a heck of a game that night and beat us.

Who was Clintwood's back that year Counts? If it was Denny Wright, he was the best running back to come out of Clintwood. Just my opinion now. Johnny McFall could do a little of everything and so could Justin. But Denny was the most exciting back I ever watched. Hamm and Daniels were awful good.

    Re: Mike Hamm Coeburn 91?

LOL No Denny was a Freshman that year (And during that time you never say a freshman on the field) Patrick Fleming was our Tail back that year going into summer he would have been our 3rd option at running back Hicks(currently a coach at Coeburn) graduated early/on time and Childress lost vision in one eye due to a BB Gun accident that left us with Patrick who was 6'3" 180 lbs and was slower than 3 of our linemen in the 40(We used to give him a hard time telling him that he was the worst back in the LPD ever to get 1000 yards in a season LOL but to his credit I can only remember him putting the ball on the ground 1 time all season and he had a ton of touches)
